Burstow: We must remain vigilant over future of Nonsuch Mansion12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 2nd Oct 2007 Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has welcomed the news that Surrey County Council has bowed to public pressure to hand control of Nonsuch Mansion back to Epsom and Sutton Council, but has said he will remain vigilant until the 'ink is dry' on any new lease. Mr Burstow was speaking in response to a statement released by Surrey stating it would consider granting a long lease for the property to Epsom and Sutton Council. Mr Burstow will speak at a public meeting at Bourne Hall, Ewell next Monday (8th October), where he will warn residents to be wary of promises made by the Council. Over the summer, Surrey reversed the position it adopted in March, when it promised to drop references to 'disposal' of the Mansion and to work jointly with Sutton and Epsom Councils. Mr Burstow said: "I am glad that Surrey County Council finally appears ready to see sense on this issue. "But I am determined to remain vigilant until the ink is dry on any new lease. "Too many times in recent months, Surrey's words have not been met by actions. "In addition, I am determined to ensure that the County Council - not local taxpayers - make up the £125,000 in revenue lost as a result of its actions."
