Further refusal to release documents heightens fear of a cover-up over Clifton resignation - Burstow

12.00.00am GMT Thu 1st Mar 2007

Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has expressed his dismay at the refusal by the London Strategic Health Authority to reveal crucial information about the departure of Lorraine Clifton, former Chief Executive of Epsom and St Helier Hospital Trust.

In addition to the documentation concerning Ms Clifton's departure, Mr Burstow asked NHS London to produce all documentation relating to the resignation of Trust Chair Michael Doherty and the appointment of interim Chief Executive Graham Smith. Mr Burstow requested information from NHS London after Epsom and St Helier Trust refused to reveal the information, citing a loophole in the Freedom of Information Act.

Now NHS London have also refused to produce documentation, citing section 41 of the Act, which protects information on the basis of commercial confidentiality. Mr Burstow has promised to pursue the matter, stating that he is determined to discover the truth about any "golden handshake" received by Ms Clifton.

Commenting on this development, Paul Burstow MP said:

"NHS London's refusal to release these documents only serves to strengthen the feeling that there is a cover-up going on."

"At a time where the Trust is cutting costs and planning job reductions, Hospital staff and local residents have a right to know whether Ms Clifton received a pay-off."

"However, NHS London's response tells us one thing - there is clearly something to hide."

"I will now be writing to Epsom and St Helier Trust to demand that they release all correspondence, emails and documentation concerning Ms Clifton's departure."
