Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow has praised the launch of Sutton's new online debate forum, calling it a "huge step forward for community involvement".
'Sutton Dialogue', which opened today, is aimed at getting local residents involved in shaping council decisions.
Paul Burstow commented on the new website, saying that "this is a huge step forward for community involvement. By allowing residents to put their ideas to the Council, Sutton is showing that the views of local people really do matter in deciding how the borough is run."
The first topic up for debate is the issue of alcohol in the borough, with local residents being asked, "Do you think Sutton is drinking too much?" This comes as new figures show that there was an 8% rise in alcohol-related hospital admissions in England this year.
The views put forward in the forum will help Sutton's Alcohol Taskgroup shape its future work.
Deputy Leader of Sutton Council Ruth Dombey stated that, "The ideas put forward on Sutton Dialogue will help to shape what we do in the future. This is a great opportunity for us to hear a large number of views on a broad range of important topics."
The new forum is funded by Capital Ambition and the Leadership Centre for Local Government. In the future, local residents could be asked for their views on creating or abolishing regulations, as well as ideas on how the council could save money.
