SILC - Young people taking the opportunity to learn a trade

Paul Burstow with young people learning a trade at SILC

Local Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed the work being done by a new training centre in Hackbridge that is helping young people learn the basics of the building trade.

The Skills and Integrated Centre (S.I.L.C.) opened it doors in September 2008 just as the recession was starting to bite. Not funded by the Government SILC have to demonstrate to schools, YOTs and other young people service providers that they offer a value for money service. To date over 70 young people from the Sutton and Merton area have taken short construction skills courses. Some of the young people have used the course as a foundation for further study as NESCOT and other local colleges.

Paul Burstow MP, said "SILC offer a practical programme of basic carpentry, decoration, tiling and health and safety. The courses can be a springboard for the young people giving them both useful life skills and a taste for hands on work in the building trade."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
