Local Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Burstow, was kept on his toes on Thursday (12th November) by an audience of carers from across England intent on grilling a panel of Party spokespeople on their Party's attitudes to carers.
Mr Burstow was invited to join the panel by Carers UK as a part of its Carers Summit held at Canary Wharf. The panel were challenged on the level of the Carers Benefit, which is worth just £53.10 per week for over 35 hours of care a week.
In Sutton according to the last census there are over 19,000 carers, many in the 60s and 70s.
Commenting, Paul Burstow MP, said, "Here in Sutton we are very lucky to have a successful Carers Centre, providing support for carers. The message that comes loud and clear from carers is how insulted they feel by the meanness and complexity of the rules governing the Carer Benefit. It is the lowest such benefit in the world and it is time the Government did something about it.
"What stuck me most from the carers at the Summit was how angry they are with the Government over its promise to spend an extra £150 million on carers' breaks and support. Up and down the country this money has disappeared. Here in Sutton it took months to get the local PCT to even answer questions about where the money had gone and even now it is not clear."
