Local Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Burstow, is organising a meeting between local traders and London Mayor, Boris Johnson, to lobby for a common sense approach to red route enforcement.
The MP is seeking the meeting following a meeting with traders and a representative of Transport for London last Friday (30th October).
Despite many attempts to get Transport for London to modify the red route controls at Stonecot Hill and adopt a more trader friendly approach to enforcement the number of tickets being issued has rocketed by more than 270 per cent (71 tickets issued in 2008 and 193 tickets to September 2009). In response the traders have set up a Twitter alert system to warn customers of the risk of getting ticketed.
Mr Burstow led a delegation of local traders including Managing Director of GSA Plastics Ltd, Zoe Oram, and owner of Plumb Crazy, Ted Luckhurst, local GP Dr Jephcott from the James O'Riordan Medical Centre, and local resident Adrian Short, to meet with Andrew Miles from TfL. Mr Miles agreed to look into the following:
·Can a loading bay be marked out at the dropped kerb in front of the garage at 41 Stonecot Hill?
·Can the loading bays already present (at each end of the parade of stops on Stonecot Hill) be re-designated as parking?
·Can additional parking spaces be provided on the hard-shoulder area (between the slip road and the main carriageway).
There are a number of planters here currently which should be removed (businesses confirmed they would be willing to
consider meeting the cost of removal, were this to be an issue). In addition, could the existing bays in this area be re-
designated as available for 20 minutes only?
·Can a pedestrian crossing be provided near to the Doctor's Surgery at 70 Stonecot Hill? Failing this, there is a nearby
traffic island - could this be re-sited to be outside the surgery to assist pedestrians crossing? Could a parking bay be
introduced outside the surgery?
·There were clear concerns about enforcement of the parking regulations: how does TfL respond to these?
·Is it necessary for there to be a single red line along the Stonecot Hill slip road at all? In addition, why is it necessary for
red lines to extend for as far as they do along Ash Road and Hill Top?
·There are various defects to the footway and carriageway all along the slip road - these should be made good.
Commenting, Paul Burstow MP said, "The meeting allowed traders to put their points of view across. It is quite clear that over zealous enforcement of red route restrictions on the service road have nothing to do with keeping London's transport moving and everything to do with boosting revenues. TfL need to understand that every time they issue a ticket it is a failure on their part.
"Although the man from TfL took down all our concerns it was clear that the real issues are above his pay grade and require changes in policy. That is why I am seeking a meeting with the Mayor or with Graeme Craig, Chief of Traffic enforcement at TfL."
