Financial pressures on the Metropolitan Police could lead to a reduction in police numbers, station closures and cuts in Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs).
The threat of cuts was revealed at a recent meeting of the London Assembly Budget Committee earlier this week where the Deputy Commissioner of the Met, Tim Godwin said he could not rule out cuts.
The Met is trying to identify economies of £48 million in the come year's budget. The Deputy Commissioner also told GLA members that the 2011 would be tougher still.
Local MP, Paul Burstow, who campaigned for the establishments of SNTs in the borough, commented,
"As the President of the boroughs Neighbourhood Watch I have seen the difference that the SNTs have already made. By getting alongside the local community, solving problems they are helping to reduce crime and the fear of crime.
"It is still early days but if there is any prospect of cutting SNTs I have no doubt that the public will join me in opposing such a disastrous decision."
