MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow, is fighting alongside users of an art therapy class at Sutton Hospital to stop it being closed, despite it being popular and the only one of its kind in the Borough.
Members of the group contacted Mr Burstow to ask for his help to save the group. They describe it as a lifeline for individuals with mental health problems because it provides a friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere where people feel secure, especially for those who did not find counselling helped them.
This is the only class of its kind in the Borough with a long waiting list, but the members were told in May that it could be closed as quickly as the following month. The users have put together a petition to try and put pressure on the Chief Executive of the local Mental Health Trust to secure the future of the group.
Commenting Paul Burstow MP said:
'Scrapping this class would have serious impact on the quality of life of those who use it. For some people, counselling is not right answer and instead they have found art therapy makes a real difference.
'I can't understand how axing this class can be justified. Its members are distraught at the prospect and the long waiting list is evidence of its popularity. I've written to the Mental Health Trust and I hope they will give me some answers.'
