A 5% cut in Government funding for the borough's sixth forms is forcing an urgent rethink of school budgets with staff facing the prospect of redundancy to balance the books.
Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, who conducted a survey of Head teachers over the Easter recess has found the worst affected schools are drawing up plans to reduce staffing.
Mr Burstow has tabled a motion in the House of Commons and taken up his concerns with the acting Chief Executive of the Learning and Skills Council, Geoffrey Russell, and Schools Minister, Ed Balls.
Commenting, Paul Burstow MP, said:
"Cuts of up to £100,000 have a huge impact on a school's budget. Heads have told me that they are drawing up plans to cut staff and reduce student numbers.
"The LSC and Minister must wake up to the educational disaster that is unfolding around them; valuable staff let go and young people denied the opportunity to learn."
