The chances of a bright girl in Sutton getting into Nonsuch or Wallington High have not been improved as a result of new admission rules proposed by the schools.
According to an analysis of the school's admission criteria requested by Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, the number of local girls getting places in the borough's girls grammar schools falls from 52% to 34.5% for Nonsuch and from 50.5% to 43% for Wallington Girls.
Commenting, Paul Burstow MP, said:
"These new figures raise some serious questions about the intentions of Nonsuch governors. As things stand the new admission rules will see the number of bright local girls getting into Nonsuch plummet.
"But a small change to the new rules could make all the difference. Simply changing the order in which the admission criteria are applied would boost the chances of local girls getting a place.
"I am taking this new analysis up with the school. My mail bag on this has been huge and many angry parents have told me that they will fight these changes all the way."
