Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has secured a meeting with Minister for Immigration, Phil Woolas, to discuss the case of an Egyptian family living in Sutton who are threatened with deportation, despite fears of discrimination against their severely autistic son if they are forced to leave. Tomorrow, Mr Burstow will keep up the pressure by presenting a petition and letter to the Prime Minister in Downing Street.
The Bolis family; Mrs Nabila and Mr Jergis Bolis and their son Marin, have lived in Sutton over six years after leaving Egypt because Marin faced discrimination on account of his condition and received no special provision on account of his autism.
Mr Burstow raised the case of the Bolis family today during questions to Home Office Ministers and paid tribute to the local campaign calling on the Home Office to allow them to stay. The 900-strong petition from the local community will be presented to Downing Street tomorrow.
While living in Sutton, Marin has attended Sherwood Park School for children with special needs and his parents have set up and run a successful business in Sutton Common, which has proved invaluable to their community and has meant they have always been self-sufficient.
Speaking after today's parliamentary session, Mr Burstow said:
'The Bolis family have worked hard and are respected members of their community. Their plight has mobilised widespread support from their friends and neighbours. Their son Marin's autistic spectrum disorder is severe and there is no help in Egypt for him. The family fear that Marin will suffer prejudice and discrimination if they are deported.
'I'm pleased that the Minister has agreed to meet me to discuss this case and I hope he will give careful consideration to the human rights of Marin Bolis and how best they are to be protected.'
