MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow, and angry residents from The Spinney sought answers last Thursday from EDF over regular power cuts and the safety of their substation, a part of which exploded, back in January.
The residents contacted Mr Burstow for assistance after attempts to gain an explanation or apology from EDF were met with little success. Fears about the safety of the substation were heightened after an explosion inside the substation, which is in the midst of a residential area.
After each problem with the substation a generator was used to deliver power to the houses; the cables for which were repeatedly stolen resulting in the posting of a security guard by the generator to safeguard the electricity supply.
Meeting with the residents and Mr Burstow, representatives from EDF offered their apologies as well as an assurance of the safety of the substation and a guarantee that they are investigating the causes of the power cuts.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Burstow said:
'Having seen where the substation is situated, surrounded by family homes and gardens, I understand why those in The Spinney are worried and have become frustrated by EDF's lack of concern about their safety fears.
'At the meeting EDF have promised to keep those in the Spinney and myself fully informed of what they're doing to solve the problems so we're all hoping that the lights can stay on from now on. Above all they have promised to put in writing assurances about the safety of the sub-station.'
