Burstow calls on council to act to spot hardpressed business and residents

March 6, 2009 12:39 PM

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has called on the Council to use early warning signs to target help with debt management and benefits on residents and businesses struggling in the recession.

The MP made his call at a recent meeting of the Council's Economic Recovery Taskforce. Mr Burstow proposed that the Council use its rates, rent and Council Tax collection department as an early warning system. Business and households cancelling direct debits or missing a month's payment might be an early sign of bigger financial problems.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said,

"The recession is really hurting some families and businesses. The Council could use its revenue service as an early warning system to identify potential problems and make sure timely help is offered.

"If we're to weather the economic storm then the Council has an important role in directing help to hardpressed businesses and families."

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
