MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow, yesterday put pressure on the government to act to ensure the Tamil community in Sri Lanka is protected in the midst of the turbulent situation there.
During Tuesdays session of Foreign Office questions in the Commons, Mr Burstow asked Bill Rammell, the Minister of State, what additional steps the Government would take to guarantee the human rights of the Tamil minority and protect press freedom.
Mr Burstow expressed his concerns for the minority Tamil community:
'The murder and intimidation of journalists critical of the Sri Lankan Government is unacceptable. It is essential that our Government is doing its utmost to help bring about respect for human rights.
'This issue touches the lives of a huge number of people beyond Sri Lanka and I am in regular contact with my Tamil constituents about their concerns. While it is the military situation that so often commands the most attention, we must never forget the Tamil community who are caught in the middle of it and are living through a humanitarian crisis.'
