Alzheimer's Society goes from strength to strength in Sutton

June 22, 2008 12:00 AM

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, met with Branch Manager, Debbie Brennan, and her team on Friday (20th June) to discuss the needs of people with dementia. The branch has expanded rapidly in recent years offering a wide range of services and support for people with dementia and training for staff is much in demand.

Mr Burstow wanted to hear the team's views about how local services need to develop and what the challenges are. He also took the opportunity to brief the team about his campaign to end the scandal of inappropriate and abusive prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs to older people.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said, "The visit was part of my regular programme of visits and meetings to keep in touch with local organisations. I am always impressed by the hard work and dedication, we are very lucky in this borough to have such a strong voluntary sector.

"During the meeting I was asked to lobby the Government to introduce a fairer way of paying for the care needs of people with dementia. This is something I have campaigned in parliament for many years. Labour were elected in 1997 on a promise of sorting out how we pay for long term care, ten years on a we're still waiting. It is time the Government ended the discrimination against people with dementia."
