The Prime Minister has agreed to meet a delegation led by Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, to discuss loopholes in the law that mean the victims of elder abuse go unprotected and the abusers go unpunished.
Mr Burstow used Prime Ministers Question Time to highlight government funded research that revealed that 342,000 older people are the victims of abuse. He also told the PM that tens of thousands of older people are routinely prescribed unlicensed drugs which keep them sedated and cut their lives short.
Paul Burstow MP said, "I am pleased that Prime Minister has agreed to meet with a delegation to discuss elder abuse.
"When the Victoria Climbe case convulsed the child protection system it galvanised Government to act. It should not take a similar shock to the adult protection system to achieve long overdue reform and action.
"The protection of Vulnerable Adults must be placed on an equivalent statutory basis as to that for Child Protection and Domestic Violence."
