Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has secured a promise from Leader of the House, Harriet Harman, that Parliament will debate the crisis in Zimbabwe before the country goes to the polls for the second round of the Presidential elections.
The promise was made during questions on Parliamentary business (22nd May) when Mr Burstow pointed out that since the first round of the presidential elections 40 Movement for Democratic Change activists and supporters had been murdered. Parliament has not debated the situation in Zimbabwe since July 2007.
Paul Burstow MP said: "Zimbabwe deserves a future decided by the ballot box. Robert Mugabe and his henchmen must be sent a clear message that intimidation and murder will not be tolerated. Almost a year has past since Parliament debated the situation. With the second round of elections looming a debate would be an opportunity for Parliament to speak on behalf of the whole nation that democracy must respected."
