Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, is backing a trailblazing mental health support programme developed in Sutton. The peer support scheme involves people who have direct experience of the mental health system working alongside mental health patients in the Chiltern Wing, Sutton.
Mr Burstow met up with the peer support team when he recently visited the Sutton Drop-in to meet with service users and staff. The Drop-in offers people with mental health problems a place they can go to meet up to socialise and get help and advice.
Commenting on the peer support pilot, Paul Burstow MP said: "It is hardly surprising that people who have direct experience of the mental health system can make excellent listening ears and advocates for those in the system now. Anything that helps to improve people's experience of acute mental health services is a good thing. In the long run I hope this pilot shows that charities like the Sutton Mental Health Foundation offer a practical way of helping mental health professional tune into the needs of their patients."
