In a parliamentary debate on the future of Henderson Hospital yesterday, local MP Paul Burstow challenged the minister to find a solution that would enable the hospital to stay open.
Mental health minister Ivan Lewis did say that moves should be made to consider regional funding for the specialist services that Henderson offers, but believed that the proposals to merge Henderson with nearby Cassel could be the solution.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Burstow said:
"It was certainly encouraging that Mr Lewis is seriously considering regional funding.
"However, it would be impracticable to merge Henderson with Cassel as the model of treatment is different, and the existing family unit mean that it would be necessary to exclude some cases currently being treated at Henderson.
"Clinicians at the hospital also tell me that there are grave concerns that any such merger would mean a national shortage of beds.
"I urge the minister to seriously consider our proposals with regards to Henderson, along with his very welcome plans regarding funding".
