Burstow joins opposition to 'tax on prudence'

Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has signed a parliamentary motion signalling his opposition to government plans to reclaim a percentage of unspent balances held by the borough's schools.
The government is proposing a change which will allow it to claim 5% of any cash balance held by schools at the end of the financial year. 9 out of 10 schools across the UK would be hit by the plans, which would affect even monies already committed to major building projects.
Under the Liberal Democrats, Sutton's schools are amongst the best financially-managed schools in London. None of the borough's schools are over-budget, and the cash balances held by the schools are the smallest in the capital.
Commenting on the issue, Paul Burstow MP said:
"This is a tax on prudent schools- like those here in Sutton."
"None of Sutton's schools are in the red and none of them is holding onto a massive unspent balance.
"But all of these schools are going to be hit by this crazy plan to claim back money which may be being saved for future investment.
"I simply cannot believe that the government knows better than our head teachers how to spend this money."
