Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, helped to prepare meals for some of Sutton's most vulnerable constituents to show his support for the National Meals on Wheels Week being held from Monday 1st October - Sunday 7th October 2007.
'Meals on Wheels' celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year- marking 60 years of service to vulnerable members of our community. Over 40 million meals on wheels are served annually to about 200,000 recipients and the aim of the week is to draw attention to the importance of this service.
Commenting on the event, Mr Burstow said:
"Meals on Wheels provide a vital service enabling many disabled or housebound people to remain in their homes long after they would otherwise have been hospitalised or taken into residential care.
"It is an excellent source of preventative care that encourages independence whilst ensuring that some social contact is maintained.
"The commitment of its members here in Sutton must be commended- during the severe flooding back in July, deliverers braved the storms and ensured that all 300 meals where delivered using 12 vans."
