Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has expressed his dismay at news that sale of Nonsuch Mansion to developers is amongst options proposed by consultants looking at the future of the Mansion and Park.
Mr Burstow has written to Conservative-run Surrey County Council to ask for clarification as rumours circulate that the Council is looking for ways to fund the upkeep of the park by selling the Mansion. He has also questioned why the Council continues to act unilaterally, releasing this latest information to the press without consulting Sutton and Epsom Councils.
After a mass protest at a Surrey CC meeting in April, Surrey Councillors agreed to remove references to sale of the Mansion from the initial proposals and to consult more widely with Epsom and Sutton Councils. Mr Burstow spoke at that meeting and presented a petition signed by almost 2,000 concerned residents.
Commenting on the news, Paul Burstow MP said:
"This latest news will do nothing to allay the fears of local residents and park users.
"Surrey Councillors have gone back on their promises.
"After they promised to drop references to 'disposal' of the Mansion, this is back on the table. After they promised to work closely with Epsom and Sutton Council, they have once again acted alone.
"I am deeply concerned about what this means for the future of the Mansion and the Park
"I would encourage anyone who has not yet done so to sign the petition at www.savenonsuch.org.uk to signal their opposition to these plans. "
