Burstow learns about home fire safety

September 18, 2007 11:33 AM

Paul Burstow MP was the recipient of a home fire safety visit from a member of the Sutton Fire Brigade. Gary Dobbs, a member of the Sutton Fire Brigade team inspected Mr Burstow's home to ensure that adequate smoke alarms were fitted and gave advice on any potential fire hazards.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Burstow said "local fire-fighters attended 120 accidental fires in homes across Sutton last year- most of which could have been avoided by ensuring that fire alarms were fitted correctly, and residents were aware of potential fire risks"

"London Fire Brigade's home safety visits provide an excellent and informative service- fire-fighters visit homes, chat about fire risks and the best ways to escape in the event of a fire. They also fit free smoke alarms if you need them and show you how to maintain them"

London Fire Brigade's top tips to protect your home:

• Fit smoke alarms on each level in your home and test them regularly to make sure they are working. When a fire starts you have minutes to escape and a smoke alarm can buy you time to get out.

• Make an escape plan so everyone in your home knows how to leave if a fire starts. Always keep the exits from your home clear.

• Take care in the kitchen- accidents while cooking account for over half of fired in homes. Take special care if using hot oil.

• Don't leave candles unattended or close to materials that might burn, like clothes or curtains.

• Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly and disposed of carefully. Never smoke in bed.

• Get into the habit of closing doors at night.

• Keep matches and lighters where children cannot see or reach them.

• Call London Fire Brigade and arrange a free home fire safety visit.

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
