10 years of exceptional service to the voluntary sector and local community were marked at a Parliamentary reception and tea last week. Local MP, Paul Burstow, had nominated Baji Kapadia as one off the borough's Volunteer Heroes.
Mr Burstow presented Mr Kapadia with a certificate as part of the 7th annual MPs' Heroes Tea Party in the Members Dinning Room, organised by The Experience Corps. The event is aimed at recognising and commending the work of older volunteers and saw the attendance of over 70 volunteer 'heroes' and their MPs.
Mr Kapadia has been involved in volunteer work in Sutton for over 10 years. He first volunteered as a driver for the Volunteer Centre Sutton and continues to offer transport for older people, people with disabilities and children with special needs to a number of destinations around the borough. He has been Chair and Vice Chair of the Volunteer Centre Sutton board of trustees. Among other things Mr Kapadia is also currently a driver for the Meals on Wheels programme and an active trustee and Chair of Sutton Garden Enterprises Limited.
Speaking after the event, Paul Burstow MP said:
"Mr Kapadia represents a strong tradition of volunteering in our borough; his hard work and commitment to serve the people in the community is an example to us all.
"Our area benefits greatly from the contributions of volunteers to take part and take pride in our community.
"I hope Mr Kapadia's work acts as an encouragement to many others to take up the opportunities available to get involved in voluntary work in Sutton and Cheam"
