Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, commenting on the admission by Epsom and St Helier Trust that it needs to make cuts of £41 million - £17 million more than originally planned - has spoken of his grave concerns for patient safety
Commenting on the admission, Paul Burstow MP said:
"The Trust has barely begun to make the swingeing cuts which it is planning as part of its 'recovery plan', yet we know that already, cuts are putting patients at risk."
"In the last few days, the Trust's Clinical Director has confirmed that an outbreak of diahorea and vomiting has occurred on one of the wards at St Helier - something which staff have attributed to the severe pressure on beds within the Trust."
"In this light, I am deeply concerned by the news that the Trust must now save nearly double its original target - I fail to see how these savings can be made by efficiency alone."
"The Trust's obsession with a 'recovery plan' designed to balance the books, must not come at the expense of patient safety."
