Paul Burstow, Liberal Democrat MP for Sutton and Cheam, yesterday challenged the Government to take action to ensure fair access to dementia drugs.
The debate was called by Paul Burstow and focused on many key issues affecting the disease such as the limited research funding dedicated towards it and the most recent guidance from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) which called for certain Alzheimer's drugs to be restricted and others to be banned altogether.
Paul Burstow commented:
'I called this debate in order to expose the illogical, unethical and damaging decision that has been taken by NICE. Restricting these drugs will place doctors in an unethical position, having to wait for a patient to deteriorate before being allowed to prescribe treatment they know could help them. People with dementia and their families will suffer as a result of NICE's decision which has placed cost above people's welfare.
'It is carers' week yet they have also been overlooked by this decision. These drugs drastically help reduce the stress on carers but their opinions were ignored when this decision was made.
'I also pressed the Government to increase investment into the causes of dementia. Even the basic science is in its infancy and starved of funding.'
