Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow today hosted the parliamentary launch of Sir Derek Wanless' long awaited social care review, commissioned by the independent charitable think tank the King's Fund.
Sir Derek, former NatWest Group Chief Executive and adviser to the Government on two previous influential reports on the future of healthcare in the United Kingdom, addressed MPs and Peers at the seminar hosted by Paul Burstow at the House of Commons.
The review found very serious shortcomings in social care provision and funding arrangements. It urged Ministers to be more ambitious about improving the outcomes for older users of social care and recommended the current means-tested funding system should be scrapped in favour of a fairer funding system.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"This report provides a much needed focus on the future of social care. It is a damning critique of the current unfair means-tested system which fails thousands of older people every year.
"Ministers must take the recommendations of the report to heart and fundamentally reform the way the social care system is funded as well as improving services for older people in need of care and support."
