Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Burstow, has today written to Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, demanding that he put pressure on the Belgian authorities after it was revealed they had still not completed their investigations into the discovery of bugging devices in the British offices at the European Parliament, just days before the start of the Iraq War.
The discovery of the bugging devices in six national government offices in Brussels, including Britain's, was announced on the day of the start of the Iraq War. The devices were found in the Justus Lipsius building which is a regular meeting place for EU ministers.
Ministers have revealed to Mr Burstow that two and half years after the British government first expressed "serious concern", the investigation is still ongoing.
Paul Burstow MP said:-
"It is astounding that after more than two and half years, the Belgian authorities have failed to complete their investigations into one of the most sensitive security breeches ever discovered.
"Serious questions must be asked as to why the Belgians appear to be dragging their heels. To find one bugging device is bad enough, but to find six and still not have found out who planted them is staggering.
"It is time that Ministers put some pressure on the Belgians to find out who bugged our government in the run up to the Iraq War. Either there is a cover up, or incompetence, or both. Whatever the reason, enough is enough."
