Thirteen children are admitted to hospital for the effects of binge drinking every day according to figures released to Liberal Democrat Health Select Committee member Paul Burstow MP.
Statistics show that the number of hospital admissions for under 18s due to alcohol related disease has increased by 11% since Labour came to power, with 4,647 under 18s admitted to hospital in 2003/04, compared with 4,173 in 1996/97.
A 15% rise in hospital admissions was also seen for over-18s in this period, with numbers reaching 41,122 in 2003/04 from 35,740 in 1996/97.
Paul Burstow commented:
"The number of children being admitted to hospital for alcohol related disease is shocking and shows that binge drinking amongst teenagers is completely out of control.
"Dither and delay are the hallmarks of this Government's approach to alcohol. It has taken eight years for Ministers to begin to wake up to the problem and ask the NHS to draw up alcohol harm reduction strategies."
