Burstow behind Bill to protect back gardens

August 1, 2005 12:00 AM

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow is part of a team of MPs hoping to pilot a backbench Bill through Parliament. The Bill is aimed at protecting back gardens from predatory developers.

The Local Government and Planning (Parkland and Windfall Development) Bill will amend current Government guidance which includes back garden land in the definition of brown filed land, leaving people's lawns vulnerable to approaches by predatory developers.

The Bill will also bolster the powers of local government in rejection planning applications and prohibit repeated planning applications in certain circumstances.

In a House of Commons speech in support of the Bill Paul Burstow said:

"Predatory developers are out and about in my constituency looking for every last little piece of back-garden land on which they can erect flats, submitting repeat planning applications. Such behaviour cannot be a tolerable way in which to manage the need for additional housing.

"Current guidance, which includes back-garden land in the definition of brown field land, fails to recognise the biodiversity offered by back-garden land so I am delighted to lend my support to this Bill."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
