Commenting on the Prime Minister's obvious surprise at the effect of the 48-hour GP target on patients when he appeared on the BBC's Question Time Programme tonight, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary Paul Burstow said,
"The Prime Minister's response to questions about NHS targets demonstrates how out of touch and detached he is from everyday life.
"It is extraordinary that the Prime Minister does not know how his target for booking appointments to see a GP is working on the ground. Patients are denied the flexibility and choice of an appointment convenient to them as GPs are forced to meet Labour's targets.
"Patients are being let down by this government and its obsession with targets and tick boxes. Its time we put patients first."
