Commenting on the Chairman of the BMA's remarks on overseas health professionals, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP said:
"The NHS has been far too dependent for far too long on overseas recruitment. Despite the protestations of Ministers that we have the most ethical policy in the world, that policy is neither monitored nor enforced.
"But the UK is not the only developed country seeking more clinical staff. We could soon face a major exodus of NHS trained professionals to the United States where there are huge vacancies, particularly for nursing staff.
"The Government should use both its presidency of the EU and the G8 to broker new international agreements. These should protect the poorest nations from the exploitation which strips their own healthcare systems of essential staff."
