Alcohol abuse is storing up huge long term health costs

March 3, 2005 2:47 PM

Commenting on the ONS figures released today on alcohol related deaths, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP said:

"These new figures are shocking. Clamping down on alcohol fuelled rowdiness is only half the equation. The Government sees alcohol as a law and order issue and is ignoring this ticking health timebomb.

"The regional variations in these figures are stark. The Government needs to think about more than just containment of the problem; it needs to deal with the causes. Alcohol abuse is storing up huge long-term health costs.

"Ministers have dithered and delayed over action to tackle the problem. Their Alcohol Strategy fails to get to grips with the binge culture which is putting the lives and health of so many at risk. Clear labelling with numbers of units should be mandatory. Alcohol problems must be treated as seriously as drug problems."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
