Commenting on the figures released today on passive smoking and the NHS smoking helpline, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP said:
"These figures are deeply worrying. The proposed ban on smoking in public places is a fudge. What is needed urgently is the Government to implement a comprehensive ban on smoking in enclosed public places which will protect those who don't wish to smoke and help those who want to quit.
"Ministers are living in a fool's paradise if they believe their stop smoking figures show a long term trend. Smoking rates have remained at a similar level over a decade. The enthusiasm of a New Year's resolution often fades quickly and the Government's stop smoking target allows someone to quit and be counted in the figures more than once in a year. There is a need for sustained programmes that offer support and follow up.
"Smoking is Britain's biggest killer and the price of dithering and complacency will be more deaths."
