Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, responding to new statistics which show that the number of deaths in which the superbug MRSA has been cited as a cause has doubled over the last four years, said:
"These findings are deeply worrying, but are only the tip of the iceberg. A clearer picture is beginning to emerge of the uphill task we face in tackling MRSA in our hospitals.
"The NHS has been fighting a losing battle against superbugs. The problems began under the Conservatives when they ordered hospitals to contract out their cleaning on the cheap.
"Labour have made things worse by giving political targets a higher priority than cleaning hospitals and fighting infections. Under the Liberal Democrats preventing, controlling and containing the spread of infection would no longer take second place to political targets."
