LABOUR AND TORIES BOTH PLACING NHS AT A DISADVANTAGE

January 19, 2005 5:54 PM

Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, responding to John Reid's criticisms of the Conservatives' health policies, condemned both Labour and the Tories for putting the private sector at an unfair advantage over the NHS.

He said:

"This really is a case of the pot calling the kettle black, with both Labour and the Conservatives offering the public a false choice.

"New Government targets mean that the NHS will be forced to hand over 10-15% of its work to the private sector.

"Ministers are putting the private sector at an unfair advantage and leaving the NHS with all the risks. Even where the NHS is hitting waiting time targets this new dogma means NHS wards and operating theatres might have to close.

"Patients want more control over their healthcare, not just a choice of hospitals. John Reid should listen more and lecture less and ensure that reforms deliver personalised care not false choice."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
