GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WANLESS REPORT

Responding to reports that Sir Derek Wanless is to undertake a review into care of the elderly, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"Health and social care are two sides of the same coin. Derek Wanless is right to argue that the Government should introduce its own review of social care funding, just as it has reviewed spending on health care.

"Chronic underfunding of social care only serves to undermine improvements in the NHS.

"Health and social care investment should be merged at a local level, to allow greater investment in prevention of ill health and services closer to home."
