Liberal Democrats today attacked the state of long-term care funding as "a shambles" as the Government today belatedly responded to the Health Ombudsman's report.
The Ombudsman's report highlights the problems resulting from the lack of a national policy and guidance framework. For many patients the complex application process for continuing care funding has resulted in hardship.
Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"For thousands of elderly people the news that ministers have finally responded to the Health Ombudsman's damning report will come as cold comfort. To have delayed responding for almost two years, having failed to act despite repeated warnings for years before that, is a disgrace.
"Elderly people have been means-tested and forced to pay for healthcare they should have received for free.
"Long term care funding is a shambles and its victims are frail elderly people. Ministers still have not made it clear whether they accept that the rules should be fair and consistent across the country."
