Commenting prior to today's debate on the Mental Capacity Bill, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"The end of life issues being discussed in the Mental Capacity Bill are being grossly exaggerated.
"This Bill is about enabling those who lack the capacity, more control over the way they live day-to-day. It would be wrong if the Bill was portrayed as permitting euthanasia, it clearly does not and says so in black and white.
"At no point should it be acceptable for the purpose of a doctor to hasten someone's death. There are far too many assumptions made, solely on the basis of age, about a person's ability to recover and enjoy life."
