Liberal Democrats today accused the Government of being "utterly complacent" on smoking as new figures show that levels of smoking remain barely unchanged over a decade.
Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"Ministers are being utterly complacent on smoking levels. They have claimed a huge drop in the number of smokers, while the statistics experts say that smoking levels remain barely unchanged over a decade.
"The Government's White Paper produced half-hearted and illogical proposals,
which will not be fully implemented for three years. Smoking is Britain's
biggest killer and the price of dithering and complacency will be lives shortened and more deaths."
