The protection of patients' lives must come first, the Liberal Democrats said today following the report of the Shipman Inquiry which found the General Medical Council is doing too little to protect patients.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP, said:
"The General Medical Council will clearly have to respond to these criticisms of the reforms that they have already made.
"The priority of any system of regulation must be the interests of the patient. Protecting patients' lives must come first at all times. However, it is important that the hands of doctors do not get tied so they cannot do their job."
