Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow has conducted an audit of local residents' on anti-social behaviour and last week submitted his findings to Borough Police Commander Joe Royal and John Deer, Community Enforcement Manager for Sutton Parks.
Paul Burstow's audit, which gathered the views of almost 100 residents in the Cheam and North Cheam area, reported concerns about groups of youths causing noise, abusive language, drinking and graffiti.
A significant number of residents specifically expressed concerns about under age drinking and Paul Burstow is calling on local police to take action on businesses that provide alcohol to under-18s.
Paul Burstow has for sometime now been pressing the local police for greater action in the Cheam and North Cheam to tackle anti-social behaviour and met with officers before the summer discuss the problems in Netley Close and Tudor Close. As a result of these talks some additional measures were taken over the summer.
In response to the audit John Deer has revealed plans for Rapid Deployment Cameras to be fitted on the junction of Church Hill Road and Priory Road this week, and for surveillance monitoring of this camera to record live incidents that can be acted upon immediately.
Paul Burstow commented:
"Anti-social behaviour can blight the lives of ordinary people going about their day to day business. One theme that emerged from my audit was that anti social behaviour does not just effect or concern the elderly. Many young professionals and families with young children made clear that they also were intimidated by youths and their behaviour in the area.
"Whilst Sutton may be the second safest borough in London it could be safer still. The best way to reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour is to increase the fear of being caught. That's why a permanent and visible presence of police on our streets is vital."
