The National Institute for Clinical Excellence is set to issue new guidelines to the NHS tomorrow which will recommend that the interval between dental appointments should be tailored to each patient's needs. The guidelines are expected to say that most adults should only have to go for a dental check-up once a year.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP, said:
"There is no sense in patients having check ups more often than is necessary. For the thousands of people who can't find an NHS dentist for love nor money this guidance is irrelevant. People are getting more and more frustrated when they cannot find an NHS dentist. The Government is sitting idly by whilst NHS dental care becomes harder to find.
"As NHS dental cover declines so too does dental health. Over half the population are not even registered with a dentist. There is no point telling people they should get a check up once a year if they cannot even register with a local dentist. Finding an NHS dentist is like finding a needle in a haystack."
