Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow has been nominated a second time in the 2004 ePolitix Charity Champion Awards for 'Older People's Champion'. The award is given to the parliamentarian who has done the most to address issues concerning the welfare of older people.
Paul Burstow was nominated this year by Anchor Homes, a charity whose chief objective is to benefit older people through provision of housing, care and support services.
In nominating Mr Burstow Anchor Homes said:
"Paul Burstow has been an active and effective champion of the rights of our older population to choose how they live their lives and in the services they access.
"Among the issues that he has consistently tackled are those that go right to the heart of how services affect the quality of life of older citizens -age discrimination in the NHS and in social care; long term care funding; and the vital role that carers, many of them older people themselves, play in our society.
"In an age when much of the public discussion of older people focuses on funding and the processes of delivering services, it is heartening to see a politician who puts the human factor at the forefront of his campaigning.
"In keeping with his consistent, intelligent analysis of the issues facing older people and his campaigning for measures to improve services and choice, Mr Burstow has heartened organisations like Anchor with his understanding of the challenges facing residential and nursing care providers."
