Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, responding to the announcement that all new NHS staff will have to undergo Criminal Records Bureau checks, said:
"The safety of patients must always come first. But it is essential that the introduction of thousands of new checks does not cause gridlock in the system and leave staff in limbo.
"This is a long overdue safeguard for patients. Given the litany of delay and backlogs at the Criminal Records Bureau, the Government must get this right if people are to have confidence in the future."
