Plans to demolish 26 homes and build 190 flats in Cheam Common Road and Lavender Avenue have been blasted by Sutton and Cheam MP as a massive overdevelopment that will put a strain on already overstretched local services. The plans will come under Council scrutiny at a meeting of the Council's Development Control Committee on 27th October.
The developer, Blazemaster, want to knock down 28-50 Cheam Common Road and 1-27 Lavender Avenue - 26 homes in all. The developer has submitted only an outline application, which means that a lot of the detail is missing from the plans at this stage. Outline applications allow developers to secure agreement to the principle of development first.
Paul Burstow MP has been contacted by local residents worried by the impact such a development would have on the area. Local roads already suffer from traffic congestion and there are problems getting into local schools and finding a local GP.
Paul Burstow MP said: "Residents already have problems getting a high school plan or finding a local GP or NHS dentist. Adding an extra 190 flats will make matters worse.
"With all London Council's under pressure from Mayor Livingstone and the Government to grant permission for more and more housing councillors often find themselves with little choice or control over development.
"I believe there is a strong case for refusing this application. It is a huge over-development of the site with all the traffic and other difficulties."
