Government naming and shaming will do little to tackle MRSA

July 14, 2004 12:00 AM

Commenting on the Department of Health's decision to publish league tables of hospital's record on MRSA on the eve of an NAO report expected to be critical of the Government's record on the issue, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"These figures only record the tip of the ice berg.

"MRSA accounts for less than half of all infections picked up in hospital. The Government has failed to introduce the systems necessary to monitor these super-bugs.

"Worse still, four years after the NAO recommended it, it is still not possible to get an accurate take on which specialties within hospitals have the worst problems with infections.

"Simply publishing crude league tables does not give doctors and nurses what they need to learn from mistakes and reduce infection in the future.

"It is typical of this Government to go for headline grabbing naming and shaming but fail to do what is really necessary to turn the rising tide of hospital infections."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
