Burstow Launches Trailblazing Children's Trust For Disabled Children And Their Families

July 12, 2004 4:14 PM

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, launched the Sutton Children's Trust on Friday (9th July) at a conference at the Salvation Army Headquarters in Benhill Road, Sutton. The conference was attended by parents, children, and staff from the NHS, education and social services.

Sutton is one of 35 pathfinder Children's Trusts working on new ways of bringing health, education and social services together to deliver support and services for disabled children and their families. The conference also had parents and children talking about their own experiences of local services and how they could be improved.

Children's Trust is focusing on developing services for disabled children. Consultations with families in the borough identified the difficulties many had negotiating their way round the 'system'. Parents told the Council that while there were some excellent services and individual staff they found it difficult to get the support they needed at the right time.

Speaking at the launch Paul Burstow MP said:

"The Sutton Children's Trust is trailblazing new ways working and news ways of involving parents and the voluntary sector. Behind ever disabled child is a whole family who have needs. Above all they want to be like any family, they want to lead lives where there is time for fun and play.

"The new Trust is all about breaking out of crisis management mode, putting in the support for children and families at the right time, right place and in the right way.

"Listening to children and parents is a key part of the way the new Trust has been set up and works. Parents sit on the board and the Council has pioneered news ways of seeking the views of disabled children and young people."
