The Liberal Democrats today called for the G8 countries to work towards an international agreement to limit the number of nurses and doctors being recruited from vulnerable countries.
The comments were made as the Chairman of the British Medical Association attacked the NHS for its "shameful record" when it comes to recruiting staff from overseas.
Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"Overseas recruitment is the Government's sticking plaster solution to the NHS staffing problem.
"It is morally indefensible to aggressively recruit nurses from developing countries with their own health crises. The ethical code of practice for recruitment agencies should be made mandatory.
"The UK is also vulnerable to overseas recruitment with many doctors and nurses going over to the United States. The G8 countries should be working towards an international agreement to limit the number of nurses and doctors being recruited from vulnerable countries."
