Commenting on findings published today in the British Medical Journal that stopping smoking at any age reduces the risks of dying from smoking-related diseases, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"This excellent study drives home the need for the Government to help smokers who want to quit. Many people think that there is no point in quitting as the damage has already been done. This study shows that Ministers need to reinforce the message that people should not give up giving up.
"While Blair unveils his plan for the NHS this week, he will ignore one of the key policies that could save lives. Banning smoking in enclosed public places would free non-smokers from the dangers of passive smoking, and would really help smokers who want to quit."
